Situation: Inspection Systems Manager, Asia, with lots of experience
using Ident Code Verifiers.
Critical Issue: The company is one of the largest replicator of DVDs
in Asia and one of the largest in the world. As they changed their manufacturing
process for discs, they created a higher resolution Ident Code suitable to hold
additional product and manufacturing data. Their current in house systems were
not able to read the new Ident Code being used on the new discs.
Reasons: The company had a great deal of experience with Ident Code Verifiers.
On their first generation DVD discs, they mastered Ident Codes with character
stroke width or bar code widths as small as 0.220 mm. However, in their second-generation
DVD discs, which were DVD9s, they mastered Ident Codes with bar codes/character
stroke widths as small as 0.130 mm.
Vision: He said they needed a reliable supplier of Ident Code Verifiers
that could handle the 0.130 mm bar code resolution without an increase in the
false reject rate. The Ident code system supplier would also have to generate
a custom bar code format suitable for the manufacturer, and be able to create
a unit that is “hands free” – minimal involvement from the operator.

Result: They have since ordered multiple systems from Xiris, using the
Xiris systems as the new standard for Ident Code Verification in their packaging
and printing lines.
