Situation: Packaging Manager, Global Client
Critical Issue: The company was on the verge of a major expansion of
their DVD printing and packaging capability. Disc contamination in the printing
and packaging departments was a critical requirement to satisfy their customers.
They decided to implement packaging lines that use automated sorting machines
to automatically place discs on an Ident Code Verifier, one at a time, prior
to manually inserting the discs into a package as well as use fully automated
packaging machines for some lines.
Reasons: In processing a very high number of discs, the customer was
very concerned about the efficiency of the Ident Code Verifiers, especially
the false reject rate, or the rate at which good discs are read to be bad. Historically,
their Ident Code Verifiers had been in the range of 0.5% false reject rate.
They had newer, higher density bar codes being implemented on their discs, with
some special characteristics such as tilting that made them harder to read.
Vision: He said he needed an Ident Code Verification system that generated
a false reject rate of 0.1% or better, with no bad discs being accepted. He
wanted to test every Ident Code Verification system on the market to determine
which one had the lowest false reject rate. For such a test, he wanted to bring
in each system and test it for 1 month with 100,000 discs or so to create meaningful
statistics.
We provided: We provided him with an Ident Code Verification system for
multiple machines.
Result: They selected the Xiris system for installation on multiple machines
in multiple plants.
